Taka Two thousand crore defamation case against Inqilab editor and journalist

A defamation case of Tk. two thousand crore has been filed against editor A M Bahauddin and journalist Saeed Ahmed of ‘daily Inqilab’ for publishing a news under the title of “Grabbed ten thousand crore taka in the name of debt”.
The case was filed on Wednesday, November 23rd in the court of Judge Shafi Uddin of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Enayet Baten Russell filed the suit on behalf of the Noman Group. Barrister Enayet Baten Russell confirmed the matter on Thursday, November 24.
Noman Group filed a defamation case under section 500 of the Penal Code claiming that the news published in Daily Inqilab was baseless. The Metropolitan Magistrate took cognizance of the case and issued summons to the accused.
Lawyer Barrister Enayet Baten Russell said that the news titled ‘10,000 crores in the name of debt’ has caused irreparable loss to Noman group, one the largest textile group of companies in south-east Asia.
On October 31st, in the last page of the Daily Inqilab published a news titled ‘Grabbed ten thousand crore taka in the name of debt’. Noman Group claimed that the report was published without any verification and in violation of the Press Council Act and went beyond the professionalism of journalism and due to this fake news, Noman Group has been discredited in the country and abroad and has suffered a financial and reputational loss of Tk. two thousand crores.
