NASSA mainland to reopen, March wages by April 12

NASSA Mainland Garments is set to resume operations on Wednesday following a temporary shutdown caused by financial constraints, with authorities confirming that workers’ March wages will be paid by April 12.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting chaired by Labor and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury at the secretariat on Monday, a day after workers staged a protest by blocking Tejgaon Link Road.

Around 700 workers had demonstrated on Sunday, prompting government intervention. The blockade was withdrawn after assurances from the minister that their concerns would be addressed.

During the meeting, the minister emphasized that keeping factories operational is a top priority to safeguard employment. Adviser to the Prime Minister Mahdi Amin also noted that factories managed by boards should not be shut down due to individual or legal complications.

NASSA Group Vice Chairman Ranjan Chowdhury highlighted financial and banking challenges faced by the company and sought government support to resolve the issues. The reopening is expected to restore stability for hundreds of workers dependent on the factory.
