Need de-carbonisation, LDC transition, and automation for sustainability: Stake holders

Industry stakeholders emphasize the need for the readymade garment (RMG) sector to tackle challenges such as de-carbonisation, LDC transition, and automation’s impact for sustainable growth. De-carbonisation involves reducing carbon emissions, while automation poses job threats, necessitating worker reskilling. Suggestions include diversifying the export basket, crafting tailored export policies, and implementing incentive schemes like India’s PLI. Additionally, facilitating fibre production diversification through duty-free raw material imports is proposed.

Post-LDC transition in 2026, the RMG sector faces crises like loss of trade benefits and international buyers’ shifts, threatening Bangladesh’s $47 billion garment export market. Without prompt action, these issues could harm both the industry and the economy. LightCastle Partners and Policy Exchange Bangladesh organized the discussion, highlighting the urgency of addressing these challenges.
