The Lycra company strengthens leadership with new COO and EVP appointments

The Lycra Company has reinforced its leadership structure by promoting Robert Johnston to Chief Operating Officer (COO) and appointing Doug Kelliher as Executive Vice President (EVP), Product. Both executives will report directly to CEO Gary Smith as the company sharpens its focus on innovation and growth.

Johnston, who has spent 35 years with The Lycra Company and its predecessor organizations, previously served as Executive Vice President of Operations. In his expanded role as COO, he will oversee global production operations, IT systems, product development, R&D staff, laboratory resources, and pilot production units—key functions that support the company’s innovation pipeline.

“I’m honored to step into this role and help shape the future of our innovation strategy,” Johnston said. “Our global teams are committed to operational excellence, and I look forward to working across departments to enhance product development and strengthen our manufacturing capabilities.”

Kelliher brings extensive industry experience from Polartec, where he spent the last decade as Vice President of Product Management. At The Lycra Company, he will lead the global product management team, focusing on strategies for fibers, fabrics, and apparel solutions tailored to evolving market needs.

“I’m thrilled to join The Lycra Company and contribute to its strong legacy of innovation,” Kelliher said. “With a talented global team and a clear vision, we are well-positioned to deliver differentiated products that drive growth and create greater value for our customers.”

The appointments signal Lycra’s commitment to strengthening its leadership bench and reinforcing its position as a global leader in fiber and textile innovation.
