Bangladesh needs to expand its export market: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged exporters to exercise caution in repatriating funds allocated for export purposes and stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between imports and exports.

During the inauguration of the 28th edition of the Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) at the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre (BBCFEC) in Purbachal, she emphasized the urgency of achieving equilibrium in trade. Sheikh Hasina encouraged everyone to be vigilant in this regard.

Highlighting the need for diversification, the prime minister urged the exploration of new markets and products to reduce reliance on a limited number of destinations. She emphasized the significance of identifying fresh products, destinations, and overseas markets, asserting that dependency on one or two global markets should be avoided.

She pointed out the challenges Bangladesh faces in overcoming various hurdles and barriers to exporting goods worldwide. Sheikh Hasina, also the chief of the ruling Awami League, disclosed the party’s goal of achieving USD 150 billion in export earnings by 2030, outlined in their manifesto for the January 7 election.

Emphasizing the time sensitivity of the task, she urged swift efforts to secure new markets. State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam, Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam, and EPB Vice-Chairman AHM Ahsan also addressed the program. During the event, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina designated Handicraft Products as the product of the year 2024, and a documentary on the country’s export trade was presented.
