BGMEA and GIZ join hands to promote sustainable transformation in apparel sector

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) have signed a partnership agreement aimed at accelerating sustainability, green industrialization and digital transparency in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector.

The agreement, signed at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka on 10th May, includes an 11-point charter of demands and a strategic cooperation framework designed to help the industry address growing global economic challenges and comply with evolving international trade regulations.

Under the partnership, both organizations will work together to improve environmental standards in garment factories by promoting LEED-certified production, reducing carbon emissions and encouraging renewable energy adoption to tackle the sector’s ongoing energy challenges.

The collaboration will also focus on strengthening resource management, waste reduction and recycling practices in line with global circular fashion trends.

A major component of the initiative involves digitalization and transparency in sector monitoring. This includes introducing digital audits for national tax returns and technology-based transparency checks involving more than 87,000 taxpayers.

The project further aims to simplify regulatory procedures through a “one-stop service” model for licenses and permits, helping reduce administrative complexity and processing time for factory owners.
