BGMEA has new board to carry out an election by June ‘25

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association- BGMEA has formed an election board and an appeal board to conduct its biennial election for the 2025-27 term. Although no date has been set, the election is expected to be held before June 1, 2025.
The election will allow voters to elect 35 directors, who will then select the office bearers, including the president and vice-presidents. Mohammad Iqbal, former BCIC chairman, has been appointed as chairman of the election board, while Syed Nasim Manzur, president of the Leather goods and Footwear Manufacturers Association, will chair the appeal board. Other key officials have also been appointed to these boards.
Previous BGMEA election in March 2024 was controversial, with allegations of voter list tampering and government influence. ‘Sammilito Parishad’ panel won all 35 director posts, and SM Mannan Kochi became president. However, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in August 2024, Mannan resigned, and Khandoker Rafiqul Islam took over. Later, the government appointed Md Anwar Hossain as BGMEA administrator.
