Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) currently has 1,806 active members following an audit by Hoda Vasi Chowdhury & Co. Of these, 1,482 are from Dhaka and 324 from Chattogram, with some under review.
As of 10th February, 690 factories were removed from the active list due to missing documentation. The 2023 BGMEA election had 2,496 voters, but the upcoming 2025-2027 election may have 1,806 voters, though the number could rise as factories update their documents. Over the past year, more than 100 factories closed due to financial and energy issues, while a similar number opened.
Meanwhile, the commerce ministry extended Md Anwar Hossain’s tenure as BGMEA administrator until 16 June 2025 due to an incomplete election process. Elections must be held before the term ends for a smooth leadership transition.
Hossain was appointed after SM Mannan Kochi resigned as BGMEA president in August due to medical reasons. Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, Kochi, who was also a political figure, faced legal charges, prompting leadership changes within BGMEA.
