Govt launches subsidised jute bag sales to curb polythene use

Government of Bangladesh has begun marketing affordable, eco-friendly jute bags in Dhaka to promote sustainable alternatives to banned polythene. Launched at Karwan Bazar, on 31st August, the initiative—funded by the Climate Change Trust Fund—will supply subsidised jute bags through TCB dealers and market associations at prices ranging from Tk 20 to Tk 80.

Environment adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan warned of strict action against polythene use, stressing its severe environmental hazards. The programme also includes trader training, awareness campaigns, and support for jute entrepreneurs to boost quality and marketing capacity.
