Textile and garment leaders seek urgent government support to protect spinning sector

Three major industry associations have urged the government to provide immediate policy support to rescue Bangladesh’s struggling spinning sector, warning that widespread mill closures could jeopardise millions of jobs and heighten reliance on imported raw materials.

At a meeting in Gulshan on 18th November, leaders of the BGMEA, BTMA and BKMEA said the sector is facing severe financial pressure and could collapse without swift intervention. They cautioned that a shutdown would also hurt banks and financial institutions tied to the textile value chain.

Industry representatives noted that India has strengthened its textile competitiveness through new incentives, while Bangladesh has reduced support. They called for urgent measures to restore a level playing field and safeguard the country’s export-dependent apparel supply chain.

Leaders also criticised the recently issued Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, saying several provisions were added without Tripartite Consultative Council consensus. They urged the government to revise the ordinance in line with previously agreed recommendations.
