Trade bodies must be reformed
Business leaders from various sectors voiced concerns about the unelected and politicized nature of many trade organization bodies, claiming that these entities serve political interests rather than business needs. They called for the dissolution of the current committees of all trade associations and chambers, including the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), and demanded new elections and reforms in rules and regulations.
At a business conference in the capital, organized by a coalition of business communities, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Bangladesh President Mahbubur Rahman emphasized the need to reduce politicization in trade organizations. He announced plans for a business review meeting where sector representatives could present their concerns in writing.
Several speakers at the event stressed the importance of reforming trade organizations and urged government action against corruption. Former FBCCI President Abdul Awal Mintoo called for a national election to restore democracy, while AK Azad, Chairman of Ha-meem Group, expressed concern about the impact of the current situation on Bangladesh’s export sector. The event highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with the current state of trade organizations and the need for significant changes to support the country’s economic recovery.
