Interim government introduced three-year export policy

The shipping ministry of Bangladesh government had announced a waiver of demurrage charges for imported containers carrying accessories and raw materials for RMG sector at Chattogram port, affected by the recent violence, curfew, and internet blackout. The disruption prevented timely delivery of goods.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury made the announcement during a meeting with BGMEA officials. Despite the port remaining operational, the internet blackout hindered port and customs operations, causing delays. The waiver aims to help RMG factories maintain import-export activities and meet shipment deadlines.

The waiver applies to containers delayed beyond the initial four-day free stay period. Charges normally range from $6 to $24 per day for 20-foot containers, with double rates for 40-foot containers. Chittagong Port Authority is awaiting an official letter to implement the decision. Container congestion at the port peaked on July 22, occupying over 79% of storage capacity.
