Dhaka International Airport’s third terminal is opening today

Today, the inauguration of the third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital is scheduled to take place. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to officially open the terminal at 10 am, and a pilot flight by Biman Bangladesh Airlines will mark the occasion.

Air Vice Marshal M. Mofidur Rahman, the current chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), described the third terminal as a significant milestone in realizing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s vision of transforming Bangladesh into an aviation hub. The terminal, once fully operational, is expected to double the airport’s annual passenger and cargo handling capacity.

Sources have indicated that by next year, 12 boarding gates, including a double entry bridge, will be opened at the third terminal. Subsequently, 14 boarding bridges will be established.

The government initiated this project in 2017, with construction commencing on December 28, 2019. The total cost of the project is estimated at 21,300 crores, with the Bangladesh government contributing 5,000 crore BDT, and the remainder funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
