Closure of Keya Groups textile sector

A protest erupted in Gazipur’s Konabari area after 2,203 workers from two Keya Group factories were abruptly laid off ahead of a scheduled shutdown on 1 May. Workers gathered in front of the factory and later at the main gate of Keya Cosmetics, prompting police intervention.

Keya Group had announced the closure of four factories in January, citing market instability, banking issues, raw material shortages, and low production capacity. However, a new notice issued today stated that workers would be permanently laid off from 1 March, two months earlier than planned, due to unresolved banking issues.

The notice assured that dues would be paid within 30 working days, and laid-off workers might be reemployed if financial conditions improve. However, workers protested, claiming they had not received their dues. HR Manager Sabina Yasmin confirmed that all payments would be made by 24th March, despite ongoing financial struggles and the factory owner’s imprisonment.
