Coordination and strategy must to avail EU’s GSP-Plus facility; Experts

Highlighting that the readymade garment sector of the country alongside other sectors must adhere to compliance principles, experts have called for coordination and a clear strategy to get the European Union’s GSP-Plus facility.

According to reports, Chairman of Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID) Dr. MA Razzaque, while making a presentation, at a virtual gathering titled ‘Towards a Transformed and Revitalized Trade and Economic Partnership with the EU: Issues and Priorities for Bangladesh’ organized by RAPID, made some suggestions on how to get the GSP-Plus benefit, urging the need to develop a national-level consensus on the options about emerging issues and any policy shifts in the EU while also sensitizing decision-makers and exporters about the new realities and trends; developing a longer-term strategy and action plan for strengthening Bangladesh-EU relations alongside meeting challenges of conformity, sustainability, and compliance.

Addressing the event, Distinguished Fellow Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Professor Mustafizur Rahman said the EU had pointed out the sectors which needed development while also advising on the matter, which, reportedly, include labour rights issues, child labour prevention, and good governance even as he maintained the new GSP would be applicable for the next 10 years, and everyone needs to work together to take advantage of the same.
