Japan bans the use of PFHxS in textiles

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment has opted to prohibit the production and utilization of PFHxS (perfluorohexane sulfonic acid), a specific type of organic fluorine compound (PFAS) commonly employed in textiles and garments for water-repellent properties. The ban will extend to the importation of products containing PFHxS. Amendments to the Chemical Substances Control Law, aimed at overseeing substances detrimental to human health, will include regulations on PFHxS and its related products.

PFHxS, categorized as a Class 1 Specified Chemical Substance, will face a complete prohibition on manufacturing, importing, and usage effective February 1, 2024. Subsequently, starting June 1, 2024, the importation of fabrics, clothing, and rugs treated with water and oil-repellent measures will also be prohibited. This move aligns with the global trend of tightening regulations on PFAS, with both the United States and the European Union working toward comprehensive regulations on these substances.
