RMG minimum wage is not enough to lead a healthy life: Development Partners

Bangladesh’s international development partners have expressed concern that the minimum wage of Tk 8,000 for garment workers, introduced five years ago, is insufficient to support a healthy standard of living. During a recent session on the textile and readymade garments sector in Bangladesh, EU Ambassador Charles Whitely highlighted the need for wage adjustments and urged brands and buyers to engage in partnerships to address worker challenges. Charge D’Affaires at the Netherlands Embassy in Bangladesh Thijs Woudstra said about the importance of improving working conditions and wages as Bangladesh graduates from LDC status. Both called for comprehensive labor policy reviews and fair treatment of the 4.5 million RMG workers in the country.
