7,000 Workers Upskilled by Shimmy
7,000 and counting
As we reflect on our journey so far, we can’t help but look ahead with optimism and excitement. Let’s take a look at some key numbers:
- Over 60% of our trainees are female,
- 91% said the training helped them get a job,
- 69% were hired one tier above typical entry-level roles, increasing their income right away,
- 51% of our trainees were promoted within six months,
7,000 workers upskilled has a ripple effect that reaches beyond just the trainees. When women are employed and economically empowered, it leads to increased consumer spending, investment, and economic growth—benefiting women but also their families and the overall economy. This is evidence of the sweetness Teddy Roosevelt shares.
A Key to Success
Our curriculum is essential in this achievement. Our learner-centric, game-based application helps sewing machine operators gain the technical skills they need to stay relevant as automation changes the nature of production work.
Our training includes digital pattern fundamentals, cut planning, marker layouts, machine skills, critical processes, and digital assembly of whole garments: a thoughtful blend of tradition and innovation.
We Go Faster Together
We’re also delighted to spotlight collaborative innovation, a driving force behind our ongoing success.
Our partners at H&M Foundation’s “Oporajita” initiative bring together multiple stakeholders to ensure women garment workers access relevant working skills and competencies for their future work.
With grant funding from The VF Foundation, we partnered with two local community organizations to recruit individuals from traditionally marginalized groups to participate in technical and digital literacy training, and our partnerships with brands like Zalando helped female garment workers envision career paths and opportunities they had never considered before.
