Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), in partnership with the ILO and GIZ, has begun issuing compensation under the Employment Injury Scheme (EIS) for EPZ garment workers facing death or permanent disability from workplace accidents.
At an inaugural event, three beneficiaries—two families of deceased workers (Dhaka and Chattogram EPZs) and one permanently disabled worker (Cumilla EPZ)—received notices of award ensuring monthly financial support similar to a pension.
The scheme, funded by a consortium of international brands, was initiated in February 2025 and formally approved by a multi-stakeholder committee including BEPZA, investors, workers’ associations, and development partners.
