Bangladesh’s EU denim exports rebound in August, but eight-month shipments decline

Bangladesh’s denim exports to the European Union (EU) recovered in August 2026, rising 12.71% year-on-year to €134.08 million. However, shipments remained below last year’s level over the first eight months, according to Eurostat data.
Bangladesh’s August exports increased from €118.96 million a year earlier, outperforming the overall EU denim import market, which grew 11.23% to €430.16 million. The country’s market share also improved to 31.2%, up from 30.8% in August 2025.
Despite the monthly rebound, Bangladesh’s denim exports to the EU fell 5.85% to €869.13 million during January–August 2026, compared with €923.11 million in the same period last year—a decline of nearly €54 million.
The contraction was steeper than the 4.40% fall in total EU denim imports, which amounted to €2.96 billion during the eight-month period. Consequently, Bangladesh’s market share slipped to 29.40%, from approximately 29.9% a year earlier.
Despite the decline, Bangladesh retained its position as the EU’s largest denim supplier, leading second-ranked Pakistan by approximately €344 million.
Pakistan’s denim exports to the EU rose 14.99% year-on-year to €87.71 million in August. However, its cumulative shipments declined 7.88% to €525.49 million during January–August, giving it a 17.78% market share.
Turkey, the third-largest supplier, experienced a sharper downturn. Its August exports fell 13.26% to €58.84 million, while shipments during the first eight months plunged 21.08% to €438.25 million, representing 14.82% of the EU market.
Other major suppliers also recorded declines. Tunisia’s denim exports fell 6.44% to €219.94 million during January–August, while Cambodia’s shipments decreased 6.47% to €144.83 million. Morocco recorded a steeper 14.48% decline, with exports falling to €63.87 million.
In contrast, Egypt emerged as one of the fastest-growing suppliers. Its denim exports to the EU surged 59.57% year-on-year to €30.67 million in August. Cumulative shipments rose 31.46% to €188.14 million during January–August, securing a 6.36% market share.
China also strengthened its position, with eight-month denim exports increasing 17.70% to €197.13 million, equivalent to 6.67% of the EU market.
Vietnam and India registered notable gains as well. Vietnam’s denim exports to the EU jumped 45.38% to €53.98 million, while India’s shipments increased 18.62% to €31.40 million during the eight-month period.
Although Bangladesh’s cumulative exports declined, the country’s performance compared favourably with several competitors, including Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, Cambodia and Morocco, all of which also recorded contractions over the period.
