Large businesses need to adopt sustainability initiatives: ESBN

Large businesses and conglomerates in Bangladesh are increasingly adopting sustainability initiatives to ensure efficient and responsible use of resources, according to experts at a recent webinar organized by the ESCAP Sustainable Business Network (ESBN). Shams Mahmud, managing director of Shasha Denims, highlighted significant investments in green technologies and renewable energy over the past decade. He noted that Bangladesh has made strides towards a circular economy through recycling and repurposing waste, and that the country hosts 200 LEED-certified factories and 10 of the world’s top green factories. However, he acknowledged challenges for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in adopting similar initiatives.

Nihad Kabir emphasized the importance of public-private dialogues and support for SMEs, while Shamima Akhter from Unilever Bangladesh discussed their commitment to local sourcing, recycling, and reducing carbon emissions. Asif Ibrahim reaffirmed ESBN’s commitment to enabling factories’ green transitions and addressing climate change.
