Bangladesh’s Minimum Wage Board has proposed a minimum monthly wage of Tk 11,900 for entry-level workers in the leather goods and footwear industry, up from Tk 7,100 set in 2020.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment issued a gazette notification on August 14, allowing stakeholders 14 days to submit recommendations or objections.

Under the proposed structure, Grade Six workers would receive Tk 11,900, including Tk 6,000 basic salary, house rent, medical, transport and food allowances. The minimum wage would rise progressively to Tk 23,255 for Grade One workers.

For employees, the proposed minimum wage ranges from Tk 14,405 to Tk 20,600, depending on grade. The board has also proposed a monthly wage of Tk 10,000 for apprentices.

The government formed the Minimum Wage Board on February 2 to review wages in the sector, whose previous minimum wage structure was introduced in 2020.
