RMG industry seeking alternative way of dispute resolution

Stakeholders in the garment industry are considering alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods to address labour disputes more efficiently and affordably than the traditional legal system. A recent study conducted by Professor Mostafiz Ahmed of Jagannath University, presented at an event in Dhaka, emphasized the potential of ADR in the RMG sector. The traditional system is criticized for its slow and costly nature, prompting experts to explore ADR, which involves a neutral third party facilitating negotiations for a quicker resolution. Key discussions centered on fixing specific timeframes for dispute resolution to prevent delays, with MA Awal, a district and session judge, highlighting ADR’s role in expediting processes. Ruhul Amin, president of the Bangladesh Federation of Workers Solidarity, stressed ongoing dialogue to address systemic issues and prioritize worker well-being.

The discussion also examined various ADR mechanisms suitable for Bangladesh’s labour disputes and potential challenges in their implementation. Industry insiders shared insights on the effectiveness of the current legal system and the benefits of ADR.
