RMG manufacturers seek supports from US brands

Amid the challenges posed by the new U.S. tariff regime, Bangladeshi apparel manufacturers are planning to reach out to U.S. buyers, requesting patience and support rather than cost-cutting measures like order suspensions and price reductions.

Several major manufacturers held a meeting to strategize their response, as some U.S. buyers have already started renegotiating contracts, asking for shipment delays, production holds, or price concessions. The BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) is preparing to formally appeal to U.S. buyers, urging them not to pass on additional cost burdens to suppliers and informing them of ongoing diplomatic efforts with the U.S. government.

Concerns are growing among suppliers, with some facing uncertainty over large shipments already in transit or pending. For example, one manufacturer reported that a U.S. buyer requested price cuts on a $300,000 order and suspension of future production. Leaders from industry groups like BGBA and BKMEA emphasized the urgency for government intervention and communication to reassure international partners.

The U.S. is Bangladesh’s top export market, with $7.34 billion in apparel exports in 2024 alone. Total bilateral trade stood at $10.58 billion, highlighting the significant impact of any trade disruption on Bangladesh’s economy.
