Leather export may reach $10 billion by 2035 if supports and facilities given like RMG sector

Bangladesh’s leather industry could achieve $5 billion in annual exports by 2030 and potentially reach $10 billion by 2035, if provided with financial incentives and policy support similar to the ready-made garments sector, industry leaders stated during a Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) focus group discussion on 25 May. Currently, leather exports have stagnated between $1.2 and $1.6 billion.

Syed Nasim Manzur, president of the Leather goods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, highlighted persistent challenges—such as a non-operational central effluent treatment plant (CETP) in Savar and the absence of international certifications like Leather Working Group (LWG)—which hamper competitiveness and export value. He also called for an orderly exit policy for underperforming firms and urged unification of governance under a single ministry.

Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan emphasized modernizing production and ensuring environmental compliance, warning that untreated waste harms river ecosystems and fisheries. Delays in utility payments by tanneries were also flagged as a systemic issue.

Other stakeholders, including DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed and FBCCI Administrator Hafizur Rahman, urged policy reforms, bonded warehouse benefits, and targeted investments. While global market penetration remains below 1%, they agreed that with proper reforms, the sector can play a vital role in employment and sustainable industrial growth.
