Garments owners urges for separate ministry of RMG

Garment industry owners have called for a separate ministry dedicated to the garment and textile sector to ensure its sustainability, as it remains the country’s top export revenue source.

At a discussion held recently at Kurmitola Golf Club, they highlighted the industry’s growing local and global challenges, stressing the need for long-term policies. Establishing a dedicated ministry, they argued, is crucial for overcoming these hurdles. The event also featured an iftar party organized by BGMEA’s election-focused alliance, Forum.

Forum panel leader Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu emphasized the need for policy support, citing frequent unrest and external pressures on the sector. He called for an investigation into potential political influences behind labor agitation and urged relief from customs-related harassment.

Former BGMEA president Anisur Rahman Sinha noted that the government lacks business insights, making it the BGMEA’s responsibility to engage policymakers. Meanwhile, former presidents Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury and Rubana Huq stressed the need for skilled leadership and a comprehensive industry policy. Rubana also urged owners to strengthen their bargaining power with foreign buyers.

Forum Secretary General Rashid Ahmed Hosaini warned that Bangladesh’s economy cannot sustain without the garment sector, underscoring its critical role in the nation’s growth.
