Global alliance for textiles sustainability and green story partner to advance sustainable practices

A new agreement between the Global Alliance for Textiles Sustainability Council (GATS) and Green Story marks a significant step toward advancing sustainability in the global textiles and apparel industry. This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focuses on positioning Panipat, India, as a key advocate for sustainable textile production.

GATS, based in Panipat, and Green Story, a Netherlands-based sustainability analytics company, will collaborate to measure and showcase the carbon footprint of Panipat’s textile sector. By quantifying the region’s impact, they aim to highlight its leadership in textile recycling, circularity, and decarbonization—strengthening its global reputation for sustainable manufacturing.

Measuring Panipat’s Sustainability Impact

Panipat has long been a leader in textile recycling and circular production. Through this partnership, GATS and Green Story will implement consistent carbon footprint assessments, offering transparent insights into the region’s environmental performance. This initiative will provide brands, investors, and policymakers with data-driven evidence to support sustainability improvements across the textile supply chain.

A demonstration of this collaboration took center stage at Bharat Tex 2025, held from February 14-17 in New Delhi. At the event, Recyclr, in partnership with Green Story, unveiled a Digital Product Passport (DPP) for a pair of jeans made from post-industrial recycled materials. Produced using cutting-edge sustainable manufacturing methods, the jeans align with Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) standards—reinforcing the importance of safety and conservation in the textile industry.

Sustainable production practices hold immense value for two key reasons:

  • Worker and Environmental Safety – The use of non-hazardous chemicals ensures safer working conditions and prevents ecological harm.
  • Resource Conservation – Recycling textiles minimizes raw material consumption, reduces waste, and lowers the overall environmental impact of fashion production. Additionally, fully reusing wastewater during manufacturing helps prevent pollution and protect natural water reserves.
