Big RMG export growth (YoY) to the USA in January ’25

Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the United States rebounded strongly in January 2025, growing 45.9% year-on-year to $799.65 million, according to OTEXA data. This surge follows a weak January 2024, which saw a 36% decline due to economic slowdown, excess inventory, and geopolitical tensions. The volume of exports also rose significantly by 49.2% to 261.29 million square meters.

Experts attribute this growth partly to U.S. importers expediting shipments before potential tariff increases under the Trump administration. Bangladesh outpaced competitors, with Indonesia growing 41.7%, India 33.64%, Vietnam 19.9%, and China 13.12%. Despite economic challenges, Bangladesh’s competitive pricing, improved production, and sustainable manufacturing contributed to this rise.

However, Bangladesh’s share in the U.S. apparel market declined from 9.7% in 2022 to 9.26% in 2024. The increase in exports from countries like India and Indonesia suggests U.S. buyers are diversifying due to cost and geopolitical considerations. China’s slower growth reflects shifting global sourcing trends.

Industry leaders see potential for Bangladesh to achieve its $100 billion export target but highlight internal challenges, including gas shortages, banking issues, and labor unrest. While Bangladesh benefits from the U.S.-China trade war, its ability to capitalize depends on domestic stability.

Vietnam remains a strong competitor, earning $1.44 billion in January 2025, while India is emerging as a key rival, offering lower prices due to local raw materials. Overall, U.S. apparel imports grew 19.46% year-on-year to $7.2 billion, indicating a recovering market.
