Bangladesh to submit written proposals on lowering import tariffs on US products: USTR

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has formally requested that Bangladesh submit written proposals outlining its commitment to lowering import tariffs on American products.

In a letter dated May 7 to Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin, USTR Jamieson Greer commended Bangladesh’s efforts to reduce its trade imbalance with the US. He also acknowledged the country’s willingness to engage in talks aligned with former President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff approach.

“My team is prepared to work with Bangladesh to address the ongoing bilateral trade deficit,” Greer wrote. He emphasized the importance of reducing Bangladesh’s agricultural and industrial tariffs, eliminating non-tariff barriers, and cooperating on broader economic security issues.

Greer welcomed Bangladesh’s reform efforts that align with key US priorities, as mentioned in the earlier correspondence. However, he also urged the Bangladeshi government to address other trade concerns, including labor rights violations and restrictions on digital trade, which he described as unfair trade practices.
