China-backed Economic Zone in Chattogram aet for breakthrough

The long-stalled Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Chattogram is expected to move into implementation by June, as the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority prepares to finalize a developer agreement with China Road and Bridge Corporation.
The 783-acre project in Anwara, planned under a government-to-government initiative between Bangladesh and China, has remained delayed for over nine years due to unresolved agreements and coordination challenges.
BEZA officials said negotiations are now in their final stage, with key contracts nearing completion. Once signed, work on core infrastructure is expected to begin, supported by a $221 million Chinese loan. The zone will priorities investment in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and engineering industries to attract foreign investors and boost industrial diversification.
Officials noted that while land acquisition has been completed, earlier delays stemmed from failed agreements with previous developers and prolonged approval processes. Recent high-level engagements, including discussions with Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen, have accelerated progress.
The CEIZ is seen as a strategic project that could strengthen bilateral economic ties and send a positive signal to Chinese investors looking to expand in Bangladesh.
