The Ministry of Commerce has suspended its decision to withdraw the bonded facility for imports of 10–30 count cotton yarn, allowing further review of the measure.
In a letter to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman, the ministry said the restriction requiring importers to submit bank guarantees would remain suspended pending further consideration.
The move follows concerns from garment exporters, with BGMEA and BKMEA arguing that restrictions on imported raw materials could raise production costs and affect Bangladesh’s export competitiveness. Textile millers, meanwhile, have supported tighter controls to protect local spinning and textile industries.
BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu welcomed the suspension and said BGMEA, BKMEA and BTMA would hold discussions to seek a consensus under the Commerce Ministry’s leadership.
The latest development comes amid broader discussions over balancing the interests of local textile producers and export-oriented garment manufacturers while ensuring access to necessary raw materials.
