Mongla Port set for Tk 4,000cr upgrade to boost trade capacity

Mongla Port, Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport, is set for a major modernisation programme involving an investment of more than Tk 4,000 crore to expand its container and cargo-handling capacity.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project, titled “Expansion and Modernisation of Facilities at Mongla Port”, today.
Under the initiative, the Mongla Port Authority (MPA) will construct two modern container jetties, container storage yards and supporting infrastructure. The new facilities are expected to add around 400,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to the port’s annual container-handling capacity.
The project also includes 49 pieces of modern equipment, hazardous cargo-handling facilities and infrastructure designed to handle more than 30 containers per hour. Once completed, the port’s annual cargo-handling capacity is expected to reach 1.5 crore tonnes.
Mongla handled 29,700 TEUs and 1.22 crore tonnes of cargo in FY2025-26, registering year-on-year growth of 38 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
China will finance approximately Tk 3,600 crore of the project through a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, while the Bangladesh government will provide the remaining funds.
The modernisation drive aims to strengthen Mongla’s position as a regional logistics hub, addressing longstanding infrastructure limitations and navigability challenges in the Pashur Channel.
