A record fine of 130 crore USD was imposed on Meta (facebook)
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, has been fined about 130 billion dollars or 14 thousand crore taka (13 thousand 912 crore 40 lakh taka) by the European Union (EU) data protection regulatory body European Data Protection Board. The fine was imposed for trafficking the personal data of European service users. This is the largest financial fine ever issued by the European Data Protection Board for data trafficking.
Along with that, Facebook has been banned from processing personal data of European users for the next six months. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has imposed the penalty under the European Union’s privacy law known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Andrea Jelinek, chairman of the European Data Protection Board, said that millions of people in different European countries use Facebook. Therefore, the amount of personal information trafficking is also huge and we have found that these information have been trafficked quite consistently and systematically.
He also said that violating someone’s personal privacy means interfering with his personal freedom. With this unexpected fine, we want to send a warning to social media that anyone in Europe who violates the privacy of others will face far-reaching consequences.
Meanwhile Meta said that they will approach the court against this verdict. According to them, the European Union’s imposition of this fine is not due to negligence or negligence but rather a ‘legal complication’.
Meta is a US-based company, Nick Clegg, chief executive of global affairs at Meta headquarters, and Jennifer Newstead, Meta’s chief legal officer, said in a statement. As a result, we are bound to operate the company in accordance with US law. US laws on protecting personal data and privacy differ from those in Europe. The company’s statement also said that policymakers in Europe and the United States have begun meeting to resolve the issue.
