BASF, the leading European multinational and the world’s largest chemical producer, has collaborated with fashion giant ‘Inditex’ to advance recyclability in the textile industry. Together, they have introduced loopamid, a polyamide 6, derived from textile waste, offering a circular solution for nylon apparel. Zara has launched a loopamid jacket, employing a “design for recycling” approach, where every element, including fabrics, buttons, filling, hook and loop, and zipper, is crafted from recycled material.
Loopamid, capable of recycling post-industrial and post-consumer textile waste, maintains similar characteristics to conventional virgin polyamide across multiple cycles. BASF aims to revolutionize the PA6 market, with plans to scale up the technology for commercial quantities, while the partnership with Inditex highlights the potential for circularity, driving sustainability in the textile industry.
‘Inditex’ has collaborated with ModaRe, RadiciGroup, YKK, and Velcro to incorporate loopamid into various garment components. Both BASF and Inditex share a commitment to ambitious sustainability goals, with BASF targeting €17 billion in sales from circular economy solutions by 2030, and Inditex striving for 100% of its textile products to be made exclusively from environmentally friendly materials by 2030.
