NIRI marks 20 years of driving innovation in nonwovens

Nonwovens Innovation & Research Institute (NIRI) is celebrating 20 years of innovation, marking its growth from a University of Leeds spin-out in 2005 into an internationally recognised commercial consultancy. Over the past two decades, NIRI has supported more than 450 companies and contributed to the development and improvement of over 1,000 products, helping clients enhance performance, reduce costs, improve efficiency, and meet sustainability goals.
Founded by Professor Stephen Russell and Chris Fowler, NIRI combines scientific excellence with commercial expertise. The organisation now employs a highly specialised team with more than 400 years of combined nonwovens experience, led by CEO Dr Matthew Tipper.
NIRI’s work spans diverse applications, including medical filtration for the NHS, hygiene products, ballistic protection, virus-filtering masks, mosquito nets, and plastic-free alternatives. To support rapid commercialisation, the institute has made significant investments in infrastructure, including the opening of Innovation House in 2023, a £1.2 million facility that more than doubled its R&D capacity.
Looking ahead, NIRI is investing in biopolymer processing, PFAS replacement technologies, polymerisation facilities, and has launched a Technology & Innovation Hub to support start-ups and scale-ups. Remaining true to its commercially driven ethos, NIRI continues to focus on delivering cost-effective, high-performance solutions while helping the textile, polymer, and nonwovens industries navigate sustainability, regulatory change, and the transition to a circular economy.
