The United States is shifting its engagement with Bangladesh from traditional aid to a stronger focus on trade, investment, and long-term economic cooperation, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen said during an event marking the 250th anniversary of American independence in Dhaka.

The ambassador described the proposed reciprocal trade and investment agreement between the two countries as a key step toward expanding bilateral commerce, attracting investment, creating jobs, and promoting technology and skills transfer. He noted that Bangladesh has the potential to become a major economic hub, supported by its dynamic private sector and young workforce, while stressing the need to reduce bureaucracy, combat corruption, and further improve the business environment.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a more investment-friendly climate through policy reforms, deregulation, tax incentives, economic zones, and high-tech parks. He also encouraged greater participation by US companies in Bangladesh’s growing economy.

Leaders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) highlighted the chamber’s continued role in strengthening bilateral trade, investment, and business collaboration, expressing optimism for a new phase of economic partnership between Bangladesh and the United States.
