Stakeholders urge strategic collaboration to boost green transformation

To strengthen Bangladesh’s position in the global apparel market, experts are calling for a greater push toward renewable energy adoption in the country’s readymade garment sector. Speakers at an industry consultation workshop on Monday emphasized that energy efficiency through renewables is critical for improving competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience.

The workshop, titled “Supporting Bangladesh’s RMG Sector in Green Energy Transition,” was organized by Swisscontact’s InSPIRE initiative, a challenge fund supported by the Embassy of Sweden, and held in Dhaka.

Over 80 professionals representing local and international brands, financial institutions, academia, and development partners participated in the event.

Maria Stridsman, Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Development Cooperation at the Swedish embassy, highlighted that the InSPIRE initiative—launched in February—is designed to support RMG manufacturers in transitioning to green energy. She likened the initiative to a “resilient baby” that requires not only resources but also openness, innovation, and collaboration to thrive. “This energy transformation is not just about technology—it is about long-term impact on Bangladesh’s economy, environment, and social development,” she said.

Bidowra Tahmin Khan, Team Leader of InSPIRE, explained that the program will offer grant-based funding to small and medium RMG factories that meet specific eligibility and milestone criteria. Funds will be disbursed in stages as recipients achieve progress benchmarks. Running from 2025 to 2028, the four-year InSPIRE program aims to align Bangladesh’s RMG industry with global Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards through enhanced energy efficiency and increased use of renewables.

Participants expressed strong interest in accessing the fund, seeking clarity on application procedures and compliance requirements. Many emphasized the need for continued support from brands, donors, lenders, and technology providers to build a truly sustainable and future-ready RMG sector.
