Bangladesh’s apparel exports to Japan saw a robust growth of 17.22% year-on-year, reaching $388.008 million in the first quarter (January–March) of 2025, according to official trade data. The surge highlights the continued expansion of Bangladesh’s presence in Japan’s apparel market, further cementing its position as a key supplier in Asia’s second-largest economy.

Menswear dominates export basket

Men’s wear accounted for the largest segment of Bangladesh’s apparel exports to Japan, representing 41.06% of the total shipments. The demand for trousers and T-shirts remained particularly strong, consolidating their positions as the top-performing product categories in the Japanese market.

Cotton Garments Continue to Lead

Cotton-based garments continued to dominate the export composition, constituting more than two-thirds of the total apparel imports from Bangladesh. The sustained preference for cotton clothing aligns with Japan’s consumer demand for comfort, sustainability, and breathable textiles.

Growing Market Share and Consistent Ranking

Bangladesh’s market share in Japan’s total apparel imports rose to 6.47%, up from 5.89% during the same period last year. This steady growth has allowed Bangladesh to retain its position as the fourth-largest apparel supplier to Japan, trailing behind China, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Japan’s Apparel Imports at Nearly $6 Billion

During the first quarter of 2025, Japan’s overall apparel imports stood at $5.996 billion, indicating a strong demand recovery in the post-pandemic retail landscape. Amid this resurgence, Bangladesh’s performance has stood out due to its competitive pricing, improved compliance standards, and expanding product variety.

Outlook

Trade analysts view Bangladesh’s growing share in the Japanese market as a promising sign for long-term bilateral trade. With Japan increasingly seeking to diversify sourcing away from traditional suppliers, Bangladesh’s commitment to quality, ethical production, and sustainable practices positions it well for future growth.

Industry leaders have expressed optimism that with enhanced product innovation and logistical efficiency, Bangladesh could further climb the ranks among Japan’s apparel suppliers in the coming years.
