Bhutan PM to review progress on Bangladesh–Bhutan special economic zone on Sunday

Bangladesh and Bhutan will hold a high-level meeting on Sunday (23 November) to review progress on establishing a Bhutan-specific Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kurigram. Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun confirmed that the project will be discussed with visiting Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, following earlier talks with Bhutan’s ambassador.

Beza has proposed a government-to-government SEZ at Kurigram Economic Zone-1, where 133.92 acres have already been acquired and another 61.87 acres are being processed. Officials say the Kurigram location offers strategic connectivity to Bhutan through nearby land and river ports, creating strong potential for expanding bilateral trade and investment.

The proposed SEZ is part of Beza’s broader plan to implement five economic zones in the short term, including the National SEZ in Mirersarai, and a 10-year roadmap for four additional zones. Bangladesh is also advancing G2G economic cooperation with Japan and China, with the Japanese partnership showing the most progress so far.
