Growing Australia’s home textile imports can be an opportunity for Bangladesh

In 2025, Australia imported home textiles worth around $2 billion, underlining a strong and growing demand in one of the world’s advanced consumer markets. While comprehensive official data for home textiles alone is still being compiled, total textile and related imports by Australia—including home textile categories such as bed linen, towels, curtains and similar finished products—remain significant within its broader merchandise import profile. Australia also imports other made-up textile articles from Bangladesh worth over $40 million in recent years, indicating existing trade flows and untapped potential.

Is Australia’s textile demand good news for Bangladesh?
Yes, the growing home textile imports requirement presents a clear export opportunity for Bangladesh, given several strategic advantages:

  1. Rising demand in Australia:
Market dynamics show Australian consumers and retailers increasingly sourcing finished textile products from global suppliers to meet seasonal and lifestyle demand. Bedding, bath linens and household textiles consistently dominate import segments, with a trend toward quality, design and variety.
  2. Growing bilateral trade:
Bangladesh–Australia trade has expanded robustly over the last decade, with Bangladesh ranking among Australia’s key textile suppliers. Most of Bangladesh’s exports to Australia are textiles and apparel, accounting for the vast majority of shipments.
  3. Improving home textile export performance:
Bangladesh’s home textile sector—comprising products such as carpets, bed linen, towels, cushions and curtains—has rebounded after years of slowdown. In FY25 the country’s home textile exports reached over $870 million, showing renewed momentum.

How Bangladesh can capture more of Australia’s home textile market
To convert Australia’s $2 billion import demand into a larger share for Bangladeshi exporters, several strategic steps are crucial:

  1. Target high-growth segments:
Australian import data indicates a strong preference for bedding products, which often contribute a large share of total home textile value. Bangladesh can focus on this and related premium segments by improving product quality and design to match Australian consumer tastes.
  2. Value addition and innovation:
Competing beyond basic low-cost production is key. Investing in value-added features such as sustainable materials, eco-certifications, and design diversity will help Bangladeshi exporters align with premium and niche retailer requirements in Australia.
  3. Trade facilitation and marketing:
Active participation in Australian trade fairs and buyer meets can help Bangladeshi exporters build brand recognition. Collaboration with e-commerce platforms and local distributors will also broaden market reach.
  4. Leverage existing export strength:
Textile and apparel exports from Bangladesh to Australia already exceed $1 billion, with the garment sector dominating. Building on this trade relationship, home textiles can be better positioned through bundled offerings and cross-selling strategies.
  5. Enhancing quality and compliance:
Australian import buyers often require strict compliance with quality, safety and sustainability standards. Strengthening quality assurance systems and certification credentials can reduce entry barriers and encourage larger purchase orders.
  6. Government and export support:
Bangladesh’s government trade agencies can offer export incentives, trade information services and logistics support targeted at exporters aiming to serve the Australian market. Also they can provide subsidies to show case manufacturer’s products to different textile fairs and exhibitions in order to expand their current market.

A Strategic path forward
Australia’s substantial home textile imports demand signals a compelling export opportunity for Bangladesh, especially as global buyers diversify suppliers beyond traditional sources. By focusing on design, quality, strategic marketing and compliance, Bangladeshi home textile manufacturers and exporters can significantly expand their footprint in the Australian market, capturing a larger share of the growing $2 billion opportunity.
