Bangladesh engages Germany and Sweden to deepen trade and investment ties

Bangladesh has stepped up efforts to strengthen economic cooperation with European partners, as Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir held separate meetings with the ambassadors of Germany and Sweden in Dhaka.

During discussions with German Ambassador Achim Tröster, both sides explored opportunities to expand bilateral trade and investment. The minister highlighted Europe as a key export destination for Bangladesh and invited German investment in sectors such as light engineering, textiles, and leather.

He also noted the presence of non-tariff barriers in trade with the European Union and said initiatives are underway to address these challenges. Emphasizing the importance of foreign investment, he added that Bangladesh needs to create jobs for around 2 to 2.2 million new entrants to the workforce each year.

Ambassador Tröster reaffirmed Germany’s interest in strengthening trade relations, particularly through skills development in market-oriented sectors and ensuring a level playing field in business.

In a separate meeting, Swedish Ambassador Nicolas Weeks discussed expanding trade and investment ties, with a focus on economic cooperation. The minister said steps have already been taken to remove non-tariff barriers with Sweden, which is expected to support future growth.

Ambassador Weeks expressed Sweden’s interest in increasing engagement, particularly in the telecommunications sector, where Swedish companies hold strong global expertise.

Officials from the Ministry of Commerce, including Additional Secretary Md Abdur Rahim Khan, also attended the meetings.
