Japan approves $312 million emergency loan to support Bangladesh economy

Japan has extended an emergency support loan of up to 50 billion yen (approximately $312 million) to Bangladesh to help strengthen economic resilience and ensure a stable energy supply amid global uncertainties.

The Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan, co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), was formalized through agreements signed on June 10 between officials of the Economic Relations Division (ERD), the Japanese Embassy and JICA Bangladesh.

According to the Japanese Embassy, the financing will support Bangladesh’s efforts to improve fiscal management, strengthen the investment climate and maintain energy security in the face of rising global energy prices and supply disruptions.

The loan is the first Japanese ODA project under the POWERR Asia initiative, which aims to enhance energy and resource resilience across Asia through emergency support and long-term cooperation.

Japanese Ambassador Saida Shinichi described the agreement as a reflection of Japan’s continued commitment to Bangladesh’s economic stability, sustainable development and strategic partnership. The initiative is also expected to strengthen regional supply chains and expand bilateral cooperation in infrastructure, energy, trade, investment and human resource development.
