India courts Japanese investment in manufacturing and advanced technology

India has stepped up efforts to attract greater Japanese investment and business partnerships, highlighting opportunities in manufacturing, advanced technology and infrastructure, with Uttar Pradesh positioned as a key investment destination.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made the appeal at a meeting with a Japanese delegation in New Delhi, attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Goyal highlighted opportunities in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, batteries, energy and next-generation mobility, following Japanโs target of investing 10 trillion yen (about $62.7 billion) in India over the next decade.
He said bilateral trade reached around $27.5 billion in FY2025-26, while Japan has become Indiaโs fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment. Existing Japanese-backed projects, including high-speed rail, metro systems and industrial townships, demonstrate the depth of the partnership.
Goyal also promoted Uttar Pradesh as a manufacturing and innovation hub, citing its large MSME base and growing export capacity. The minister is scheduled to visit Japan from August 24โ27, 2026, to advance investment and economic cooperation with Japanese government and industry leaders.
