Dhaka is again at the top in air pollution

The capital city of Dhaka has again topped the list of air pollution. Dhaka’s air quality index (AQI) recorded 168 at 8:44 am on Monday, 29th May which is considered as ‘unhealthy’ according to the air quality. This information is known from the Air Quality Index (IQAIR) index of the air quality monitoring organization.

At the same time, Indonesia’s Jakarta is in the second position of air pollution. The city has a score of 159 on the pollution index, meaning its air is at the ‘unhealthy’ level. Chile’s Santiago is third in the pollution list. The city has a pollution score of 157 which means that the air quality is also unhealthy.

Generally an AQI between 100 and 200 is considered unhealthy for sensitive people. Similarly, if AQI is between 201 and 300, the respective city environment is considered bad for living and if it is between 301 and 400, it is considered dangerous. AQI is an index to measure air quality. Government agencies use the index to determine how clean or polluted a particular city’s air is and whether it may affect human health or cause concern.

The overall AQI of Bangladesh is determined based on five pollutant criteria. They are particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone. Dhaka has been plagued with air pollution problems for a long time. Dhaka’s air quality generally becomes unhealthy during winter and improves during monsoons.
