1320 MW coal based power plant to start in October
A 1,320-megawatt (MW) coal-based thermal power plant in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali is set to begin commercial operations by the end of this year, officials announced. The plant’s first unit, with a capacity of 660 MW, will start production in October, followed by the second unit in December.
This new plant is the second 1,320 MW coal-based power facility in Kalapara upazila, alongside the nearby Payra Thermal Power Plant. The plant was constructed by a joint venture between Norinco Intl Cooperation Ltd, a Chinese heavy construction company, and the state-owned Rural Power Company Limited, under the name RPCL-Norinco Intl Power Limited (RNPL).
The project, which cost Tk 27,000 crore, began construction in August 2019 on a 950-acre site along the Ramnabad River, just two kilometers north of the Payra plant. Project Director Taufiq Islam confirmed that all ancillary work, including the physical structure, is complete.
