US concerns about law and order in Bangladesh

American companies operating in Bangladesh have expressed concerns about law and order, especially amid recent unrest in industrial zones, as well as challenges in profit repatriation due to the ongoing dollar crisis and supply chain disruptions caused by port congestion. These issues were discussed during a meeting between leaders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) and a visiting US delegation led by Brent Neiman, assistant secretary for international finance at the US Department of the Treasury.

Top executives from around 10 US companies in Bangladesh raised concerns about the unrest affecting production and goods transport, noting that factory closures could deter investment. They also pointed to delays in the supply chain due to port logjams, calling for better port management.

Additionally, businesses face difficulties in repatriating profits due to the dollar shortage, while issues related to energy payments and the digital economy were also highlighted. AmCham President Syed Ershad Ahmed noted improvements in tax and customs relations under the interim government but emphasized the need for enhanced law enforcement.

The US delegation focused on trade challenges, economic reforms, and opportunities for the American private sector to support Bangladesh’s growth. The visit marks the first by a US delegation following the recent political transition in the country.
