Jean Pesme appointed World Bank director for Bangladesh and Bhutan

Jean Pesme has officially assumed his role as the World Bank’s new Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan. A French national with over 20 years of experience in global development and financial sector reform, Pesme brings a strong background in finance, having most recently served as the World Bank’s Global Director for Finance.

Since joining the World Bank in 2003, Pesme has held several senior leadership positions, including within the International Finance Corporation (IFC). He previously led efforts to build sound, inclusive, and sustainable financial systems and headed the global team on financial stability and integrity.

Pesme praised Bangladesh for its innovation and resilience in tackling development challenges and expressed eagerness to work closely with its government to ensure inclusive growth. In his new role, he will oversee the World Bank’s strategic engagement in Bangladesh and Bhutan, with a focus on aligning support with national priorities and encouraging private sector investment through partnerships with IFC and MIGA.

To date, the World Bank has committed over $46 billion to Bangladesh, which hosts the lender’s largest International Development Association (IDA) program, currently valued at $15.4 billion in active support.
