BGAPMEA seeks recognition as direct exporters

Garments Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers Association (BGAPMEA) has urged the government to recognize the sector as direct exporters. Speaking at the closing ceremony of two exhibitions in Dhaka on January 11, BGAPMEA President Md Shahriar highlighted that the sector exports $8.5 billion annually, with $7.5 billion considered deemed exports through industries like garments and pharmaceuticals and $1.5 billion as direct exports. Despite this contribution, the sector is not acknowledged as an independent export category.

Mr. Shahriar emphasized that recognition and policy support could help the sector capture a larger share of the $750 billion global market. Employing nearly 800,000 workers without labor unrest, the industry seeks inclusion in policy discussions to foster growth. Md Anwar Hossain, vice chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau, assured action upon receiving necessary data. Former BGAPMEA president Motiur Rahman noted past appeals for recognition were unsuccessful.

The event also featured the 22nd Garments Technology Bangladesh and the 14th International Garments Accessories and Packaging Expo, showcasing products and machinery from 500 companies across 25 countries.

Adviser Brigadier General (retired) M Sakhawat Hossain criticized external propaganda against Bangladesh’s RMG industry and highlighted systemic banking issues caused by past corruption.
