Bangladesh aims to be in the number 1 spot in global apparel market: Kihak Sung

Bangladesh has the potential to become the world’s leading apparel exporter with the right policies and industry reforms, said Kihak Sung, founder of the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), at the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025.

Speaking as the keynote speaker at the “Textile and Apparel” session held at the InterContinental Dhaka, Sung acknowledged Bangladesh’s current position as the second-largest apparel exporter globally and emphasized the opportunity to move to the top.

In his presentation, “Bangladesh Moving Forward: Through an Investor’s Lens,” he outlined critical areas for progress, including increased technological adoption, advanced workforce training, and developing domestic facilities for man-made fiber production.

Sung also stressed the need for policy support and the expansion of bonded warehouse facilities to ensure faster access to raw materials, allowing for quicker and more efficient production and export processes.

He praised the interim government’s strategic responses to recent trade uncertainties, noting the positive impact of the temporary suspension of Trump-era tariffs. “These proactive efforts bring welcome relief and show strong leadership,” he said.

However, Sung cautioned that Bangladesh must focus on value-added garment production to stay competitive. “Without this shift, sustaining growth in the international market will be a challenge,” he warned.

Anwar Hossain, vice-chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau and BGMEA administrator, also addressed the session, highlighting industry growth strategies and support mechanisms.
