BEPZA plans new EPZs in north to boost industrial expansion

BEPZA is planning to establish two new export processing zones (EPZs) in Rangpur and Sirajganj to accelerate industrialization in northern Bangladesh and promote renewable energy use, particularly solar power.
The announcement came as BEPZA marked its 46th anniversary, highlighting its continued role in driving economic growth under the Prime Minister’s Office. Executive Chairman Mohammad Moazzem Hossain said the initiative will expand the geographical spread of industrial development, complementing ongoing EPZ projects in Jashore and Patuakhali.
Officials noted that around 450 acres of land in Rangpur’s Gobindaganj area have already been allocated for the proposed EPZ, which is expected to generate employment for over 100,000 people.
Building on the success of its eight operational EPZs and the BEPZA Economic Zone in Mirsarai, Chattogram—launched in 2018 with exports already underway—the authority continues to attract strong investor interest.
Over the years, BEPZA zones have diversified beyond ready-made garments into sectors such as electronics, automotive parts, footwear, and bicycles. Currently, only 32% of factories produce garments, while 68% belong to non-RMG industries.
Despite occupying less than 0.001% of the country’s total land area, BEPZA-managed zones contribute around 15–20% of Bangladesh’s total exports annually, underscoring their significant impact on the national economy.
